Video and Live Entertainment

I've been thinking a lot lately about all of the different ways that video is used in live entertainment, presentations, and theater, and how the role of video has evolved over the last 5-15 years. Live entertainment here would be defined as stage shows, parades, large venue or arena "spectaculars", touring shows, or any other show which includes live performers -- as opposed to attractions and exhibits which generally do not include live performers.

Historically, one of the uses of a live entertainment piece has been to take a film or video experience and "bring it to life" - such as the Lion King on Broadway or a theme park production based on a feature film.  So live entertainment producers have typically thought more about how to recreate film with live performers and traditional theatrical devices.  And, in the past video technology and costs have been prohibitive in many cases.  But media is better, easier, less expensive, and more compelling than ever to utilize so it should be considered among the options to add dimension, interest, and cultural relevance to a show.

So, here is a list of things that video can do to enhance a live entertainment production:

  • As scenic - Video can provide a texture and backdrop that is "alive" and can change.
  • As a character - Video can be used to present an animated character, a character special effect (such as a magical transition), or etherial.
  • To present existing or historical footage - such as feature film clips.
  • To show something or someone otherwise impossible to include - such as an interview, behind-the-scenes feature, or exotic location
  • As a special effect - for a transition, texture, or illusion
  • As a central character - itself being a focal point in the production through animation, color, rhythm, texture

I will in the future expand on and clarify each of these, but for now wanted to capture them to maybe spark your imagination in thinking about how video could enhance your production.

What are your thoughts on video in live entertainment?
